I’ve never really made scripture memorization a part of my life. People would tell me about its importance and give me examples of verses to memorize, but my eyes would always gloss over and my mind would always wander.
As I write this, I’m starting to get it. I’m not very good at following through with things just because someone tells me to do them. Usually there has to be a reason for me, I have to understand why and make it real rather than blind obedience.
I already know of a couple of good reasons to memorize scripture. I know it is “a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105) and that it helps ”that I might not sin against You” (Psalm 119:11). I also realize I inadvertently have many verses tucked away in my head just from years of church attendance, personal devotions, small groups, Bible studies, and growing up in Sunday school. I think I have all the books of the Bible memorized too – in order! Impressive, eh? I can thank Miss Brown for that – a wonderful woman who poured alot into the blossoming faith of a few kids each Sunday morning back in the 80′s. But I digress…
As I researched more Bible verses with “word” in them I came across SO MANY reasons to memorize scripture and hide it in my heart and the young hearts of my boys. There is one major reason that sums it all up in such a simple and fascinating way, and it is revealed right in the scripture I hope to start memorizing.
As I lay out for you all the wonderful things the Word of God can do and all that it means for our lives, the qualities may start to sound vaguely familiar. They might remind you of something… or someone… see if you can figure it out.
Scripture has the power to:
- Sustain us more than any earthly provision (Deuteronomy 8:3)
- Keep our way pure (Psalm 119:9)
- Keep us from sinning (Psalm 119:11) and from seeing death (John 8:51)
- Cause us to rejoice (Psalm 119:74) and sing (Psalm 119:172)
- Give us hope (Psalm 119:74) and direction (Psalm 119:105) and strength (Psalm 119:28) and understanding (Psalm 119:28) and true wisdom (Jeremiah 8:9) and faith (Romans 10:17)
- Determine what kind of faith we have by what we do with it (Matthew 13:20-23)
- Bless us (Luke 11:28)
- Make us holy (Ephesians 5:26) and born again (1 Peter 1:23)
- Save us (James 1:21)
- Judge the thoughts and attitudes of the heart (Hebrews 4:12)
- Create the heavens and the earth (2 Peter 3:5)
- Make God’s love truly complete in us (1 John 2:5)
WOW! And there’s more!
Scripture is:
- Flawless (2 Samuel 22:31)
- Right and true (Psalm 33:4)
- Near to us (Deuteronomy 30:14)
- Eternal (Psalm 119:89)
- Truth (John 17:17)
- The Sword of the Spirit – part of the Armour of God (Ephesians 6:17)
- Living and active (Hebrews 4:12)
What do you think? Got it figured out? Now here’s the really DEEP part – this excites me because I only really just got this as I read through these references. A big lightbulb moment happened for me, and it is clearly laid out in the first verse of the first chapter of the gospel of John in the New Testament:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
And then Revelation 19:13 says:
And He [was] clothed in a vesture dipped in blood: and His name is called the Word of God.
What it comes down to is the more we know scripture, the more we know Jesus. Memorizing it and hiding it in our hearts means having more of Jesus in our lives. He is the living and active (Hebrews 4:12) Word of God. He is the Bible made into human form. It’s pure magic. And THAT gives me more than enough reason to memorize God’s words to grow in my own faith, and help my sons to grow in theirs.
